The Human Genome Project: lessons from large-scale biology.

چکیده
Thinking big comes naturally to many biologists. Pursuing biological research on a monumental scale traditionally has not. Given the depth of that dichotomy, it is amazing that any established scientist would consider signing on to a biological research endeavor of the magnitude of the Human Genome Project (HGP), let alone agree to help steer the ship. Yet, each of us did. Now that biology’s first large-scale project has been completed, there are many outcomes to celebrate: the development of an array of new technologies; the generation of highly useful genetic, physical, and transcript maps of the genomes of several organisms; the coupling of a scientific research program with a parallel research program in bioethics; and, now, the highly polished sequence of the human genome, free and readily accessible to all. Not only has the HGP essentially completed all of its initial goals and more (Table 1), it has done so more than two years ahead of schedule and at a cost less than originally expected. The experience of overseeing the work of the HGP provides a number of lessons about the organization and conduct of large, international collaborative projects (2). As such endeavors promise to become even more prevalent in the future, it is our hope these observations will prove useful to others venturing into the world of large-scale biology.

I-49: Human Y Chromosome ProteomeProject
The success of the Human Genome Project (HGP) has provided a blueprint for the approximately 20,000 gene-encoded proteins potentially active in all of the hundreds of cell types that make up the human body. Yet we still have limited knowledge about a majority of the gene-encoded proteins which are the “building blocks of life” and “cellular machinery”. It is estimated that for nearly half of th...
متن کاملOn Bioinformatic Resources
A starting point of curating bioinformatic resources for the public is marked by the establishment of the US National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in 1988 [1]. One of its many purposes is certainly to echo the initiative of the Human Genome Project (HGP) –– when two landmark reports were published at the same time: ‘‘Mapping and Sequencing the Human Genome’’ by the National Resea...
متن کاملBig data, open science and the brain: lessons learned from genomics
The BRAIN Initiative aims to break new ground in the scale and speed of data collection in neuroscience, requiring tools to handle data in the magnitude of yottabytes (10(24)). The scale, investment and organization of it are being compared to the Human Genome Project (HGP), which has exemplified "big science" for biology. In line with the trend towards Big Data in genomic research, the promise...

Sequencing of the human genome has ushered in a new era of biology. The technologies developed to facilitate the sequencing of the human genome are now being applied to the sequencing of other genomes. In 2004, a partnership was formed between Washington University School of Medicine Genome Sequencing Center's Outreach Program and Washington University Department of Biology Science Outreach to ...
متن کاملSome Effects of the Human Genome Project on the Erdős Collaboration Graph
The Human Genome Project introduced large-scale collaborations involving dozens to hundreds of scientists into biology. It also created a pressing need to solve discrete mathematics problems involving tens of thousands of elements. In this paper, we use minimal path lengths in the Erdős Collaboration Graph between prominent individual researchers as a measure of the distance between disciplines...
